Heart Health Month Celebrated

Amy Whary at the wheelThe Tel Hai community’s annual blood drive exceeded their goal on January 30 by collecting 42 whole blood donations—the maximum number possible during the event. For the 58 year old retirement community it was the most successful blood drive to date.

Miller-Keystone Blood Center representatives and volunteers set up their operations on-site at the Tel Hai campus located off Beaver Dam Road, east of Route 10. The organization provides blood products to the Brandywine and Paoli Hospital locally. Donors were provided with a blood pressure check and cholesterol test results were mailed to individual’s homes.

In all, 27 Tel Hai staff members and 13 residents were blood donors. Two persons from the greater community also contributed that day. Miller-Keystone provided refreshments to all blood donors and the Tel Hai Volunteer Services Department had $200 worth of prizes and small token items to offer each participant with a spin of the wheel. Tel Hai also made a $250 cash donation to the American Heart Association on behalf of the donors. During the month of February heart health was also the focus of an educational presentation; healthy eating options are offered on campus daily.

The Tel Hai community was founded in 1956 by two local Mennonite congregations to offer care to area seniors. Begun in a farm house that sheltered 14 residents, the nationally accredited nonprofit community has grown to over 600 residents who enjoy an active lifestyle in a variety of cottage and apartment residences as well as supportive living in personal care and the health care center. The 149 acre campus also offers and Child Day Care, respite and rehabilitation services to the greater community.

When the weather outside is frightful — our residents are happy to call Tel Hai “home.”

Robin LaDrew w sled 004 (2)The atypical winter of 2014 has been noteworthy for many reasons, but residents of Tel Hai are still smiling. We have some adventurous folks who are enjoying the snow with neighbors and family members. Robin LaDrew of Cedar Ridge shared her enjoyment sledding on campus. “I met with my neighbor, Chris, and we’ve gone down the hill behind her house a couple of times. I’ve gone with my grandson too. Behind my house you can go very fast and sail across a frozen patch and up the next rise! This is one childhood pleasure we are still enjoying at Tel Hai!”

When the power outage hit Tel Hai—the second largest in PECO’s history—residents were feeling safe, comfortable and well cared for on campus. Maple Knoll resident, Joanne Belson shared, “Yes, the weather outside was frightful…but I am so happy to be living at Tel Hai. Our wonderful staff cared for our needs and ensured our safety throughout the outage. Roads, driveways, sidewalks and porches on campus were cleared and salted. Staff offered transportation to the Garrett Community Center for hot meals. We could spend the night there as well, if we desired. Staff members from all levels of care were available around the clock. Moving to Tel Hai has been a true blessing. I couldn’t be happier that I made the decision to move here.”

Why I am Moving to Tel Hai…

Moving to Tel Hai is a BIG decision. My husband of 45 years passed eight years ago and that felt like the end of my world. All my family is gone; neither my husband nor I had siblings and we had no children. Thank heavens for my friends!

I’ve always lived in this area—went to school here, worked here. The only time I lived away was over the winter…for many years we would spend six months at our home in Florida.

There are many people here I already know. When I was young Tel Hai was “the old folks home.” Well, guess what? I am now one of the “old folks.”

I’ve been volunteering here already so by the time I move in to my StoneCroft apartment home I should know my way around—and be familiar with the many options and activities available. The staff here is great—so helpful. They make you feel very welcome and wanted. The people at Tel Hai will be my family now.

I won’t have to worry about property problems or repairs anymore. Since I’ve had experience with many retirement communities in the area I am happy to say Tel Hai is my choice. I can hardly wait!
